IF YOU CAN'T BEHAVE... A married couple, flying on a British Airways jet from Los Angeles to London, got into a spirited discussion somewhere over the Rocky Mountains which escalated into a major fistfight. Their battle was so ferocious that the alarmed crew had to make an emergency landing in Chicago, where police came aboard and arrested them. The couple has been banned from ever flying on British Airways again.

THE UNKINDEST CUT OF ALL: Overwhelmed by his gambling debts, Huang Chun-ming, a 35-year-old Taiwanese man, had his friends chop off his left hand with a samurai sword so he could collect $645,000 in insurance. He told the police that a gang of teen-age motorcycle thugs did the deed, but the cops became suspicious when they couldn't find the severed hand at the alleged crime scene. They found it later at his home and charged him with insurance fraud.

AND THAT'S ON THE RECORD: Chris Greg, who is urging people to elect him to a seat in the Florida legislature, was embarrassed when it was revealed that, at age 30, he himself has never voted in his life. But though he has never participated in the political process, he does talk like a slippery politician. A reporter asked him if voters should consider his failure to vote when they go to the polls, Gregg responded, "I think it speaks for itself.'' When asked what that meant, he replied, "Exactly what I said.''

TIME TO RISE AND SHINE, PINHEAD: A 21-year-old Maine man broke into a Bartlett, N.H., home with burglary in mind. But, after gathering up the loot, he made a fatal mistake. Instead of getting as far away from the crime scene as possible, he went to a bedroom and took a nap. A neighbor noticed a strange car in the driveway and called police who woke the guy up and arrested him.

OOOH, DON'T YOU LOVE A TAKE-CHARGE GUY? Galib Andang, a Muslim rebel leader in the Philippine jungle who has been holding a bunch of western hostages for ransom since April, abducted a woman who lives near his camp and married her. Afterwards, he paid her family a dowry of about $8,000. Andang, 38, ha  been married twice before. It is the first marriage for the bride, who is in her early 20s.
