WHY DIDN'T WE SEE THIS COMING? Two convicts doing life in in a Tennessee jail were taken to court to answer for their previous escape from the Riverbend maximum security prison in 1998. They didn't make the hearing. They escaped.

THANK GOD WE'RE BACK TO NORMAL: The terrorist attacks against the United States caused a brief downturn in crime in many American cities as everyone, including the bad guys, stayed indoors to watch the events unfold on television. But that's over now. After President Bush told the American people to go back to work and do what they normally do, one Missouri police officer said, the criminals, too, returned to their trade. The crime rate is on the rise once again.

IT WAS ALL A MISUNDERSTANDING: Luke Edgar and Joshua Lent, both 21, were engaged in a spirited discussion that ended when Edgar bit off the tip of Lent's nose. Edgar told a New Hampshire judge that he feels ashamed and guilty about what he did, and Lent testified that his friend didn't mean to hurt him and he probably wouldn't do it again. Nonetheless, the judge sentenced Edgar to 12 consecutive weekends in jail.

NOW, DESE GUYS GOT CLASS: Burglars broke into Cork, Ireland's posh English Market through the glass panels in the roof and then feasted on gourmet cheeses and quaffed vintage champagne worth $233 a bottle. Once sated, they outfitted themselves in the finest clothes from an upscale shop on the premises and then fled, no doubt in a very dignified way. They stole no money.

OK, MAYBE IT WAS A DREAM, OFFICER: A 54-year-old woman told police that she scuffled with a man who tried to rob her at an ATM machine in Laconia, N.H. She said she hit him with her walker and her purse, and he ran away. She apparently didn't realize that there are security cameras at all bank machines. Police reviewed the tape which showed that she withdrew money without incident and left. She has been arrested.
