October 14, 2001 OH, NEVER MIND: People are nervous about terrorism these days
and are on the lookout for suspicious people. So, with this in mind, the
Massachusetts State Police issued an advisory to those in the Bay State
who may react with alarm at seeing armed men in camouflage outfits,
possibly operating camouflage boats along the coast. UH, I DIDN'T MEAN YOU, OFFICER: A teenager set up a speed trap
on the side of the road, putting a flashing red light on his car and
standing outside the vehicle with a radar gun like a policeman in a
strictly unauthorized effort to slow down speeders driving past his
Pennsylvania home. His little game fell apart when he caught a real
policeman in the trap. IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA: A Swede was sentenced to one month
in a Stockholm jail for drunken driving, but his friend and fellow drunk
asked him if he could serve the sentence instead to keep himself sober
for a while. The impostor borrowed his friend's ID card and managed to
serve two weeks before being caught. YOU'RE SAYING A BIRD BROKE YOUR WRIST? A deliveryman reporting
to his office in Oak Brook, Ill., found two angry Canada geese blocking
the door. Rather than challenge them, he went around to a side door,
where he was confronted by another irate goose. He tried to hurry past
the bird, but it attacked. So he ran. Then he fell and broke his wrist.
He has been awarded $17,000 in workman's compensation. WE HAVE A FEW BIDS FROM LIVESTOCK: Barry's Underground, a
saloon in Elkhorn, Neb., which is up for sale, is a most unusual
establishment. The 5,200-square-foot subterranean building was built in
the 1960s - the height of the Cold War - as a bomb shelter for cows.
Owner Barry Caughlin told potential buyers, "It can survive just
about anything up to a direct hit." Mike Pingree
