August 18, 2002 ONE THAT GUNS DOWN YOUR NEIGHBORS: Mikhail Kalashnikov, the 82-year-old Russin general who invented the AK-47 Kalashnikov assault rifle, said in a recent interview that he wishes he'd designed something to help people: "A lawn mower, for example." AND I'M SURE THEY WILL: As police pursued him at a high rate
of speed, a man who robbed the Bank of America in Irvine, Calif.,
started throwing the money out his car window causing other motorists to
pull over and gather it up. The robber was chased down and
arrested. ONE TOUGH OLD DUDE: A 90-year-old man went out to tend his beehives behind his Vienna, Austria, home without wearing protective clothing, and was stung a thousand times. He survived. Doctors were astonished. OUTSIDE!? WE SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT: Takashi Ishizuka, a
high-ranking member of a Sumiyoshi-kai criminal gang, was in the
critical care unit of a Tokyo hospital recovering from a failed
assassination attempt. Several policemen were outside his door to
prevent his enemies from finishing the job. To no avail, alas. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE: Teachers at Mount Vernon Middle School, one of the poorest performing in Los Angeles, have been informed that they must follow a new dress code that prohibits, among other things, pierced tongues. Some of them rallied in protest.
