I'VE SEEN THIS ONE BEFORE: Responding to a for-sale ad for a vintage 1968 Mercury Cougar, a former New York police sergeant looked the car over and took pictures of it to send to a retired detective who he knew was a big fan of the Cougar.
By an amazing coincidence, that very car had been stolen from that very detective 20 years earlier. The man selling it said he had gotten the car from a family member. Arrests are in the family's future.

NO, NO, A LEFT, TAKE A LEFT! Two men in Tallahassee, Fla., fleeing the police in a stolen car, tried to shake them by taking a shortcut through the grounds of the governor's mansion. They smashed through a gate, roared across the grounds and exited by smashing through another gate. They were later arrested.

SANTA GOES TO PRISON: A 66-year-old man who often played Santa Claus in Warren, Mich., got into an argument with his daughter when they were putting up his Christmas decorations. He stabbed her to death.     He will be in prison for most of the rest of his life.

THE STUDENTS AREN'T REALLY THAT INTERESTING: Female teachers in Lucknow, India, have been banned from knitting in the classroom and told to concentrate more on the students.
The principal secretary of education for Uttar Pradesh said, "They are often more interested in knitting than in teaching."

EL GRANDE NO MORE: Forestry officials in Tasmania, who launched a burning operation to regenerate the woodland, wound up accidentally destroying the nation's largest tree, so big it is known as El Grande.
